Io and Zeus in stone is a lot of sculpting! But I went on this morning...but not yet ready..after lunch I started printing the second colour of my woodcut...the colour is alright, but I had a lot of trouble with hairs and dustparticles in my ink! damned! I like the expression of woodcut..the sharpness and the clear colourparts. When you print by hand (with the 'baren') the print becomes much more subtle and atmospheric. Less of a 'screenprint'. My whole studio lies full with printed sheets and the smell is sweet and oily!

I am preparing my frame for the doubleportrait and cutting the second colour for my woodcut. Painted the sides of this doubleportrait and retouched some parts. Last weekend I had a interesting discussion with my brother about my little 'transformation' panels. He said that for instance the 'knijper' was too obvious an idea..."everybody thinks the same" he said. But I didn't agree. It is not what everybody thinks, but after such a picture is made....then people think that it is obvious..but only afterwards...after i made the picture! These small paintings are mend to bring people into a mild confused state...so one starts to look at life in a different way. My believe is that all beings are connected in some way or another!

Had to wrap paintings in foil this morning which is always fucking work...wrapping in and wrapping out and in and out!!! after this 'pleasant' work i started to try out the first colour for my new woodcut..that was nice work...that's what I like to do, to throw myself in a new project...forget the time, forget prinsjesdag, forget myself and become an artwork!
But....I had to stop to teach at the Wackers...also nice again.

Today i tried to do some work, but it was impossible! I started to make a print of my woodcut, but i couldn't get further then mixing the colour. Sometimes life gets in between art! My gallery is interested in my little 'transformations' like 'the fingerpepper'...Thats nice!

This morning I went to Pulchri to see my brother and to bring a work for the 'salon' and to view an exhibition.
In the afternoon i started to whitewash my frames! I also made a hangingsystem for a cut-out.

Just returned from sculpting my 'io'. In the morning i painted the sides of my painting 'the knijper' and then went out to buy printingpaper and two frames to stretch linnen on for the next portraits. After stretching prepared them...not yet ready...so tomorrow I have to go on. Did read something and had a long telephone call with a collegue.

I started with a woodcut today. You have to be always careful not to take the wrong side because it will be printed mirror-like. I was thinking a lot about which colours i shall take and how many blocs i will use. In the end i made up my mind and started drawing the outlines on the woodbloc. Then i started to cut parts away...it went allright....

No framing today...only painting and drawing! Retouched some parts in the doubleportrait and also in 'Gerano-Tivoli'. Then i started to design a woodcut about a landscap/village in Umbria. Made the drawing two years ago when I travelled through parts of Umbria. I want to make a multi-coloured woodcut so the design has to be perfect, otherwise the shapes will not connect in the print. I had an excellent idea for a new 'Alter ego'! Scetched it in my 'book of funny ideas'.

Like yesterday i framed a lot of traveldrawings today. Lot of work and one has to be very concentrated because otherwise you cut the wrong part of your passe-partout or worse, cut your thumb in half and than you get a lot of blood on your drawing and on the expencive passe-partout carton. So keep your head constantly with the work!...no blood today! After I had enough i went on to the doubleportrait and started to put another layer over the armparts to make it more subtle in colour and fleshtone. I also glazed the darkpink dress of the older girl.

I started early today because a student came to do some underpainting in my studio. She did it well and I finished my transitional thing which listen to the Dutch word 'knijper'. When she went to work I continued to do some framing of my landscapedrawings and because I had no more white passe-partout, I went to the shop to buy some. Later i did some more framing of the Irish scenes and was satisfied. See you tomorrow!

yesterday I continued to paint the red dress of the older girl on the doubleportrait. After a whole week teaching i was happy to be in my studio again. Today I had too much other things to do. Tomorrow it will be time to think about a new work for my next exhibition.

This morning I had a meeting with some portraitpainters of the Portretschap about a new exhibition and perhaps publishing a book about our works. Difficult! publishing a book is one thing....trying to get it distributed another! But we'll see. In the afternoon I went to my studio to look at my freshly painted portrait of the young girl....and I was satisfied. But of course I worked on it for a little bit more. I also did some sketching for a woodcut of an Italian landscape I made in Umbria. Would be nice for the exhibition in november about traveldrawings. Fortunately the waterproblem in my studio has been solved!

Although yesterday I had waterproblems in my studio due to the downpour (it started dripping in one of the corners of my studio) I started the portrait of one of the girls and today I continued also at the double portrait of the two girls. Yesterday in between knocking on my door by the plumbers, I started the face of the older one which went all right and today I finished the hair and painted on till she was completely finished. It was hard work to paint the whole figure, but in this way one gets the unity of the complete figure. The colors are becoming as I intended. The girl was happy with her likeness and called it super! In the afternoon there came a student for some advise about her work.

This morning I started the underpainting of 'de knijper' a new 'transformation' of mine. i also helped a student of me to make a copy of a Vermeer painting. It so nice to see how a beginner in painting finds her way in this complicated form of depiction. Vermeer is such an enigma in representational art...it's so unexplainable what is really happening in his work! Vermeer was an visual wonder! Specially in his time...but also still now!

Today i did this and that to my paintings. I had to paint colors at the sides of my Gerano cutout and touch some parts of the dress of the youngest of the doubleportrait.In the evening I went to the opening of a portrait gallery in Haarlem. Had some pleasant conversation with some old collegues of mine and talked with the new owner.

Yesterday I started to paint the youngest of the two sisters. Although she was not sitting very quiet, I could paint her reasonably fast and to the point! Because she just returned from her vacation in Greece, she had a lot of color. Today she came again and i continued on her portrait. She has beautiful long brown hair with lighter parts in it. Very interesting to paint! The colors of skin and hair are matching quite good with the blue background of the sky and mediterranian sea i painted. Just as I hoped it would do..'The Gerano busstation' is almost finished and I'm very happy with the blue of the bus together with the 'napels yellow' of the house in the background.

Worked a great part of the day at 'Gerano busstation'. i painted the bus bleu...the bleu of the Italian 'pullmans' as they call them. I started with a mangan-bleu but after painting it, i saw it was too greenish so I mixed in some ultramarine. It worked and now it looks very much of a 'Cotral' bus to Tivoli and Rome! Specially the frontwindow with the busdriver in it was hard to get right...not too clear but with some color. Also the wheels are always complicated to get the perspective right and the rubber color of the tires. But...it's coming...

The underpainting of 'Gerano' was still not dry enough to paint over, so I started to paint the background of the doubleportrait. The color blue of the sky is opening the painting completely. I painted a few little clouds in it and the sea a little darker. I think that it will be a good colorcomposition together with their dresses and skin.
I read a little bit and looked in my new book about 'surrealism'. After that I smoked a sigar and finished the primer of my new panel.

I finished the underpainting of 'Gerano' yesterday and it has to dry before I can continue. This weekend I got a lot of ideas for new cut-outs I want to make, so I started this morning to sketch them in my book. After that i started to draw one of the ideas properly and in the right size to cut it from. It's called 'de knijper'. Again it's a transformation. I already started cutting and preparing it with primer. In the afternoon I bought a new book about Surrealism with a lot of new examples I didn't know....brought me again new inspiration! Surrealism and Pop-Art are two of my favorite inspiration sources at the moment...
